Keepin’ It Cozy: How to Prepare Your Home For Fall

The sun may be shining down on those of us here in Los Angeles, but that doesn’t mean that fall isn’t here! Fall is such a beautiful time of the year, with the trees beginning to shed their gold-colored leaves and the grocery stores filled with pumpkins, squashes, and gourds in every shade of orange. As we begin the transition away from summer and its warmer, brighter days towards winter, it’s important to make our homes extra cozy and inviting. Consider it the perfect excuse to pick up a new scented candle (or two!)

1/ Bring The Outside In

Fall is a time of breath-taking natural beauty, so why not celebrate the changing of the seasons by bringing the outside in? According to Feng Shui, displaying flowers and plants in your home also helps renew the energy flow of a space thanks to their vibrant lifeforce. Also, by bringing elements of the outdoor world into the inside, you’re creating a more harmonious and balanced environment.

Here are my favorite ways to incorporate the autumn flowers and foliage into your home:

  • Set out vases of freshly-cut sunflowers. Their sunny yellow petals are great for adding a touch of warmth to your home.

  • Place a bowl of apples on your dining table. Not only are apples synonymous with the autumn harvest, but they’re also a symbol of good fortune and prosperity and will help to boost the energy flow of your home.

  • Place two pumpkins outside on either side of your door. They can be real or faux, but if you do use real ones, be sure to replace them when they start to rot!

  • Decorate your hearth with silk leaves that mimic the beautiful red, gold, and orange coloring of the fall leaves outside.

Remember, in Feng Shui it’s perfectly fine to use silk flowers or silk leaves instead of real ones and still get the same energy flow-boosting benefits. If you do choose to use real flowers, however, make sure to dispose of them when they start to die. Dead flowers can quickly turn the energy of a room from alive and vibrant to stale and stuffy. Similarly, dried flowers, leaves, and potpourri are best avoided altogether since they can disrupt the positive flow of energy in the home.

2/ Add a Splash of Color

The natural color palette of fall is predominately made up of warming yellows, reds, and oranges, so add touches of these colors to your home to honor the changing of the seasons. In Diamond Feng Shui, orange in particular represents celebration, so add orange-colored cushions to your couch or orange-colored candles as a reminder to celebrate all the wonderful bounty you’ve been blessed with this year. Think of it as your own harvest of gratitude!

3/ Light Up Your Home

Scented candles are a wonderful and inexpensive way to make your home feel warm and inviting as the temperature begins to dip. The scents that we typically associate with fall, such as cinnamon, ginger, and vanilla, not only smell great but they can help to give our mental health a boost too. These are all comforting scents that we often associate with happy childhood memories, with a cozy day spent baking in the kitchen, and with a general sense of nostalgia. As a rule of thumb, place your candles in the South, Southwest, Northeast, and Center areas of your home in order to really boost the energy flow of your home.

To further boost the amount of light in your home, be sure to clean all your windows so that the natural daylight isn’t being blocked by dust, dirt, and grime. By helping as much sunlight as possible shine through, not only does this help to keep things brighten but it also helps to boost the energy flow in your home.

Lastly, to help your home remain welcoming to friends, family, and other guests, consider getting some solar powered lights in your front yard to help keep your door illuminated in the evening and during the darker autumn months.
