Four Steps to Giving Your Office Desk a Feng Shui Upgrade
In the fast-paced world of modern workspaces, it’s easy to overlook the energy that surrounds us, especially when it comes to our office desks. Yet, the way we arrange our workstations can affect everything from our productivity and focus to our opportunities for success. With just a few simple shifts however, you can create a desk that’s a beacon of positive energy!
1/ Choose the Right Location
When you’re at your desk, it’s important to ensure that you’re sitting in “power position”, which refers to the way you position yourself in your space so that you’re the most powerful person in the room. The first and most important rule of power position is that you must be able to see the door to the room without having to turn your neck.
Why is this important? Well, in terms of Feng Shui, you want to make sure you’re in the path of the incoming flow of energy. You want to see all the opportunities that enter through the door, and you want to make sure you’re making yourself accessible to any good fortune that comes knocking. This placement helps eliminate feelings of vulnerability, which is important for boosting your confidence whilst at work.
Begin by positioning your desk so that you’re facing the door and so there’s a solid wall behind you. It’s very important that you don’t face the wall otherwise you’ll find yourself “up against the wall” during work.
It might be the case that you work from home and your desk is in your bedroom, or that you use your dining table as a desk. This is a potential pit-fall since the merging of different energies (i.e. sleep energy with work energy) can cause energetic disharmony. If you can see your desk from your bed, it’ll be hard for you to have a peaceful night’s sleep when you have that visual reminder of all the work you still have left to do! To preserve harmony and maintain balance, you can use fold-out screens, room dividers or curtains to create a division of space and hide away your desk whilst you’re sleeping.
2/ Declutter for Clarity
Clutter is one of the biggest energy drains in any environment, and your office desk is no exception. Feng Shui teaches us that clutter disrupts the flow of Chi which can lead to mental fog and stress - not great if you’re looking to climb that career ladder!
Begin by emptying out the drawers, empty out any document trays or folders, and clear everything off the top of the desk.
Firstly, get rid of any stationery items that are broken and make a list of anything you need to replace or replenish. Then, go through any loose papers or documents and organize them into two piles: items that can be thrown away and items that need to be filed away. For items that need to be filed away, use a folder with dividers to keep things organized and so that you can find anything they might need at a glance. Make sure these folders, or indeed any stationery, aren’t kept on your desk when they’re not in use. It’s bad Feng Shui to have folders or stationery in front of you or within arm’s reach, or to have them placed on the ground. Instead, you can keep them in a drawer hidden away or in a filing cabinet so they’re not in sight.
Once your desk has been cleared, give it a good clean with some lavender-scented cleaning product.
3/ Check Your Desk
The shape and material of your desk are also important. Avoid having a see-through glass or glass-top desk. While it may look modern, see-through furniture in Feng Shui can actually lead to financial deals and opportunities “falling through.” Instead, a sturdy, wooden desk will be much better in helping you attract financial abundance. Pick one with strong legs and avoid one with a roll-top. Wood is an ideal material since it represents growth, whereas metal can magnify the electromagnetic fields of your computer equipment and be bad for your well-being.
A desk with sharp edges is also best avoided. In Feng Shui, the flow of energy can get “stuck” on anything too sharp or pointed, so go for images with curved, rounded patterns to keep the flow of energy (and money!) moving. If possible, opt for a rounded or oval desk to promote the free flow of energy.
4/ Add a Plant
Plants are one of the most powerful Feng Shui tools for enhancing energy in your workspace. They bring in the wood element, symbolize growth and vitality, and help to oxygenate the room. When choosing plants, aim for those with rounded leaves and avoid plants with sharp thorns or spiky edges.
It’s important to ensure your plants are healthy and well-cared-for. Dead or dying plants bring stagnant energy into your space, so remember to water it accordingly!
