Feng Shui SOS: "How Do I Clean My Crystals?"

As part of maintaining your crystals, they’ll need to be cleansed regularly. Not only for practical reasons, such as to remove any dust or dirt that they may have gathered, but also to recharge the crystals’ energy. In Feng Shui, crystals work hard to either absorb negativity or to attract positive energy, so regular cleansing helps “recharge their battery” and means that you’re able to feel their benefits for the long term!

The first step is to cleanse them with water in any of the following ways:

  • Give them a thorough rinse under the tap and clean them with lavender soap.

  • Soak them in a bowl of saltwater to purify them (for about 20 minutes).

  • Leave them outside the next time it rains—just remember to bring them back inside again!

You can make these methods more effective by visualizing the water cleansing away any negative energy. Remember to make sure your crystals are fully submerged in the water and to pat them gently dry afterwards.

The second step is to activate them:

  • Place them outside in direct sunlight at noon on a bright, cloudless day to recharge under the sun’s rays. Leave them out there for three hours, bringing them in at 3 p.m.

  • When you bring them back in, activate the crystal with your intentions. With your eyes closed and your mind at rest, pick up your crystal and visualize a bright white light surrounding it. Think carefully about what it is you want your crystal to help you with and what it is you’re looking to attract.

As for how often you should do this, it’s recommended that you cleanse and reactivate your crystals:

  • Immediately after you first buy them to remove any energies of the previous owner

  • At least once every six months after that

  • Any time you find yourself going through intense or emotionally difficult times, or when you feel as though your crystal has lost its radiance
