The Top Four Feng Shui Reasons Why You Need a Houseplant

There’s a reason why the humble houseplant is the go-to housewarming gift. Not only do they add a splash of color, but plants have long been used in Feng Shui as a quick and easy way to boost the energy of a room. My personal favorite? The orchid; with its delicate petals and light fragrance, it represents beauty and fertility and can help improve both your romantic and family relationships. If I haven’t convinced you just yet, scroll down to read my top four reasons why you need a houseplant!

1/ They Represent the Wood Element

Adding houseplants to a room strengthens the energy of one of the five elements – wood. In Feng Shui, the wood element represents longevity, good health, and emotional and spiritual growth. Plants also symbolize regeneration, so they’re the perfect choice for helping keep you centered any time you’re experiencing a lot of change.

2/ They Come With Their Own Lifeforce

Since plants are living, growing things, adding one to a room is a simple way to bring in fresh, new lifeforce. If at any time the energy in your home starts to feel stale and you’re feeling “stuck”, getting a plant is just one thing you can do to kickstart that flow of positive, abundance-attracting energy again!

3/ They Bring The Outdoors, Indoors

Maintaining harmony is very important in Feng Shui. When your home is out of balance, you may experience emotional highs and lows and difficulties communicating effectively with those you live with. By adding elements of the outdoor world in your home, you help to rebalance the energy and create a more harmonious environment.

4/ They Can Bring You Good Fortune

You can use houseplants to attract abundance and good luck to your home in a number of different ways. Here are some examples of my favorite ways to use them as part of your Feng Shui activations:

  • Outside your front door (either of your home or office), you can attract good fortune by placing a pair of round-leafed plants, one on either side of the door.

  • You can attract better health to all those in your home by placing large plants in the East of your living room or office, medium-sized plants in the South, and smaller plants in the Southeast.

  • Add green leafy plants to your bathroom to help purify the energy of the area.

  • Add a lush plant to your dining table when it's not in use to help attract abundant energy and bring some fresh life force into the room.

Houseplant Maintenance 101

As a rule of thumb when picking out your plan, is to get one with lush, round leaves and avoid spikey or point-leaved plants. These points (as found on spider plants, cacti, aloe vera, and other succulents) “stab” at and disrupt the flow of energy. This in turn can lead to conflict within the home – definitely something you want to avoid!

Also, in order to retain all the benefits of houseplants, make sure that you’re watering them enough and giving them adequate sun exposure. If you happen to find your plant looking like it’s starting to die and no amount of sunlight or careful watering can revive it, it’s best to dispose of it. Keeping a dead or dying plant in your room can cause more harm than good to the energy of a room.

So, what are you waiting for? Pick up a houseplant today and give your home’s energy flow a fresh new jolt of life!
