Space Clearing for the New School Year

Preparing properly for the new school year can be the difference between good grades and great grades!  

Start by talking with your children about their goals for the upcoming school year. Is there a particular subject they’d like to do better in? Do they want to try out some new extracurricular activities, get on better with their classmates, or win an academic award? Have your child write down their goals on a sheet of paper, and then display them in their Success Direction in their bedroom. 

Once they’ve set their intentions for the next year, then space clearing can begin.

Computer

When’s the last time your child sorted through all the documents on their computer? Have them go through everything and either delete old documents that they no longer need or file documents away in dedicated, well-labeled folders. For example, you can have the folders organized first by school year, then subject, then assignment. Make sure the documents you have filed away are labeled properly; “The Effect of Soil Nutrients on Plant Growth” is preferable to “Plant Essay - Final Version”! Consider backing up any particularly important documents on an external hard drive for extra peace of mind.

Then, finish by taking a look at your child’s computer wallpaper. It may be tempting to have a nice family portrait as their wallpaper, or a photo from their latest holiday, this is actually rather counter-productive. You want your child to remain focused on their schoolwork when on the computer, not fall victim to any sort of distraction. Instead, keep it simple with their school’s logo as their wallpaper instead, or an image that represents their academic goals.

Desk

Desks can often become a dumping ground of all sorts of things, so set some time aside with your child to give theirs a thorough decluttering. Empty out the drawers, empty out any document trays or folders, and clear everything off the top of the desk.

Firstly, get rid of any stationery items that are broken and make a list of anything you need to replace or replenish. Then, go through any loose papers or documents and organize them into two piles: items that can be thrown away and items that need to be filed away. For items that need to be filed away, use a folder with dividers to keep things organized and so that your child can find anything they might need at a glance. In general, you want to make sure to keep unnecessary clutter at an absolute minimum because it’s this clutter that can cause the energy flow to stagnate and, on a more practical level, makes it much harder for them to work efficiently.

Once the desk has been cleared, give it a good clean with some lavender-scented cleaning product and place a freshly cleansed and activated white quartz crystal on it. This will help to absorb and purify any stressful, anxious, or negative feelings that your child might have whilst studying.

This is also a good time to check to see if your child’s desk is positioned in a good space for them. Ideally, they would be sitting with their back to the wall, with a good view of the door, and facing towards one of the Personal Directions. Similarly, check to make sure their desk chair is still giving them proper neck and back support. In Feng Shui, abiding by the rules of Power Position means that you’re putting yourself in the path of the incoming flow of positive energy and making school success easier to manifest.

To help your child to keep their desk tidy and to stop them falling back into bad habits, get them into the routine of dedicating five minutes each day to organizing their files and spritzing their desk with some lavender spray to freshen its vibrational field.

School Books

Take a look at all the school books your child currently has - are there any that need to be returned to school? Are there any that you can sell, or donate? For the school books that your child still needs for the upcoming year, consider moving them to a bookcase placed in their Wisdom Direction to help activate them.

Closet

If your child wears a school uniform, check to make sure everything still fits and there’s nothing that needs repairing. If there are items of uniform that your child has outgrown, you can either list them on a secondhand site to sell or, if your school is affiliated with a local uniform program, donate them.
